Elopement Announcement & Invitation Wording
You eloped — now you get the fun part: telling everyone. Whether you're sending a simple "we did it" card or inviting people to a relaxed party afterward, here's how to word it warmly, with real examples for every situation.
Announcement vs. invitation: pick the right one
These two are easy to confuse, and using the wrong format sets the wrong expectation:
| Elopement announcement | Post-elopement party invitation | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Share that you married | Invite guests to celebrate |
| Sent | Days to weeks after the ceremony | 3–6 weeks before the party |
| RSVP? | No | Yes — you're catering |
| Tone | Joyful, brief | Relaxed, welcoming |
Elopement announcement wording examples
Simple and modern:
We eloped!
Emily & James
were married in an intimate ceremony
Saturday, the fourteenth of June, two thousand twenty-six
Big Sur, California
With all our love and no regrets
Warm, for close family:
We couldn't wait to begin our life together —
so we did.
James & Emily Whitfield
were quietly married on June 14, 2026
Surrounded by the people and place we love most,
we're so happy to share our news with you.
Playful:
Plot twist: we got married.
Emily & James said "I do" on a cliff in Big Sur,
June 14, 2026 — just the two of us and the Pacific.
No gifts, no fuss, just happy news.
Post-elopement party invitation wording
Once you're ready to gather everyone, word it as a celebration of an already-married couple — not a wedding invitation. The crucial signal is that the marriage already happened, so guests don't expect a ceremony.
Relaxed reception:
We tied the knot — now let's celebrate!
Please join
Emily & James Whitfield
for dinner, drinks & dancing
Saturday, the twenty-second of August, 2026 · 6:00 PM
The Old Barn, Asheville, North Carolina
Kindly reply by August 1
"Married & merry" tone:
Married in June · Merry in August
Emily & James already said "I do" —
now we'd love to raise a glass with you.

What to leave off
- Apologies. "Sorry you weren't invited" makes guests feel like an afterthought. Skip it entirely.
- Registry lines. As with any invitation, keep gift information off the card — put it on your wedding website if you have one. Many eloping couples add a cheerful "your presence is the only present we need."
- "Ceremony" language on a party invite. There's no ceremony to attend, so words like "marriage of" or "request the honour of your presence" mislead guests.
A note on timing
Announcements can go out as soon as you're ready — many couples send them within a week, while the news is fresh and exciting. If you're throwing a party, treat its invitation like any event: mail it 3–6 weeks ahead with a clear RSVP date so you can plan catering. See our invitation timeline for the full schedule.

How do you announce that you eloped?
Lead with the joy, not an apology. State that you married, the date and place, and a warm line about wanting to share the news. A printed or digital card such as "We eloped! Emily & James were married on June 14, 2026, in Big Sur, California" works for friends and family who weren't there.
Should an elopement announcement apologize for not inviting people?
No. Eloping is a valid, personal choice and your announcement should sound celebratory, not guilty. If you want to acknowledge close family, a brief warm note ("we couldn't wait to begin our life together") is gracious without apologizing.
How do you invite people to a party after eloping?
Word it as a celebration of an already-married couple, not a wedding. For example: "We tied the knot — now let's celebrate! Join Emily & James for dinner and dancing on Saturday, August 22." Make clear it's a relaxed party so guests know what to expect.
Do elopement announcements need an RSVP?
A pure announcement (just sharing the news) needs no RSVP. If you're inviting people to a post-elopement party, add an RSVP method and date so you can plan catering and seating.
