Wedding RSVP Card Wording
The RSVP card is small but it does a lot: it captures who's coming, what they'll eat, and any extras you need to know. Here is how to word it — formally and casually — with copy-ready templates and the "M-line" finally explained.
The parts of an RSVP card
- The deadline line — "Kindly reply by the first of August."
- The name line — the famous "M_____" (more on that below) or simply "Name(s)."
- Accepts / declines — "___ accepts with pleasure / ___ declines with regret," or a friendlier "Will you be joining us? Yes / No."
- Meal choice — only if you're serving a plated dinner with options.
- Extras (optional) — a song request, dietary needs, or number attending.
What is the "M" on an RSVP card?
The line that reads "M_______________" is a prompt for the guest's title and name. The M starts Mr., Mrs., Ms. or Miss, and the guest fills in the rest: "Mr. and Mrs. James Bennett." It's a formal convention. If it confuses your crowd, replace it with a plain "Name(s): ______________" — that's increasingly common and perfectly correct.

How to set the deadline
Work backwards from your caterer's final headcount date. Most couples set the RSVP deadline 3–4 weeks before the wedding — late enough that guests have decided, early enough to chase no-replies and finalise numbers and the seating chart. If you mailed invitations 6–8 weeks out (see when to send), a deadline 3–4 weeks before gives a comfortable window.
Boost your reply rate
Pre-address the return envelope and add a stamp. It removes the two biggest reasons people delay replying, and noticeably improves your response rate. If you're collecting replies online instead, print a short, memorable website link on the card.

What does the 'M' mean on a wedding RSVP card?
It's a prompt for the guest's title and name — the M begins Mr., Mrs., Ms. or Miss, and the guest fills in the rest. If it's confusing, replace it with a plain 'Name(s): ______' line.
When should the RSVP deadline be?
About 3–4 weeks before the wedding. That gives guests time to decide while leaving you enough room to chase non-responders and give your caterer a final headcount and seating chart.
Do I need to include a meal choice on the RSVP card?
Only if you're serving a plated dinner with options. For a buffet or family-style meal, you can leave meal selection off and just collect attendance (and any dietary needs).
How do I get more guests to RSVP on time?
Pre-address and stamp the return envelope, set a clear deadline, and keep the card simple. If you're collecting replies online, print a short, easy-to-type website link.
Can I collect RSVPs online instead of with a card?
Yes. Many couples now use a wedding website for replies. Print the link clearly on the invitation or a small insert, and still give a reply-by date so you can finalise numbers.
